Natalie

Her mind had a nasty habit of spoiling things sometimes.

Focusing on the negative and sucking the life out of any positivity.

That is exactly what was happening to her now.

Luke did his best to stop her from crying. He held her, he kissed her, he made love to her again and again. But still that sadness stayed with her.

It slipped into her dreams when she eventually fell asleep, and she not only dreamed that Luke died, she’d been there to see it happen. He was walking across the desert, kitted out in uniform and armed. Then suddenly she saw a spray of bullets coming from the sky. They all hit him, killing him instantly.

There was blood everywhere.

The sight of him dead woke her right up with a start and she realized that she was crying again.

Crying in her sleep. That couldn’t be a good thing.

It took a moment for her eyes to adjust to the bright morning light that spilled through the windows.

She eased herself up onto her arms and looked over at Luke lying next to her, his arms loosely holding her. He was out cold.

Natalie took a moment to look at his perfect form. God, he looked just as perfect asleep as he was awake. Probably more beautiful asleep because the bad boy attitude was missing, so it gave him a softer look that enhanced his beauty.

She watched the gentle rise and fall of his powerful chest and those tattoos she loved.

She wished she could stay.

Natalie had to go to work, but that wasn’t why she was going. She would have passed on work today.

She was going because she needed to clear her head. Work out this thing with Luke, because she didn’t know if she could do it.

Do this.

She didn’t know if she could just be with him for the time he was on leave and then detach and pretend that she wasn’t terrified that he might get killed.

If anyone asked her for the honest truth, she would say that she absolutely hated the idea of him going back to the Marines, and it was something she had to deal with.

She still felt the same about him. God, after all these years she’d come right back to the place where she loved him.

Had she ever stopped?

No.

Carefully, she moved away from him and her clothes put back on, which were damp from last night.

She took one look at him before she left, then she caught a taxi home.

She called in sick at work, deciding to spend the day by herself to work out her issues.

Then she did the worst thing she could have ever done.

Luke hadn’t talked about what happened to him in Afghanistan and neither had Jessica, or their parents, or Natalie’s parents.

No one had spoken about it, and she knew they knew what had happened. Sure, it was on the news, and not just any old news either. It was on CNN, Fox News, everywhere, and honestly, Natalie had thought it best to stay away from TVs during that time for the sake of her sanity and nerves.
